About my research

My research field is that of Intelligent and Expert Systems, with a strong focus on the development and application of new mathematical and computational techniques. Also, I have experience in the context of Image processing and understanding, which is a second line of research in which I am very active.

My PhD thesis was focused on the mathematical foundations of global optimization algorithms, both theoretically and practically, with an emphasis on their application to the efficient training of artificial neural networks and other Machine Learning methods. The optimization algorithms developed in my thesis have been used to improve the performance of neural networks in a variety of contexts, including image segmentation, compression, and the computational resolution of intractable problems. This led to numerous publications in international conferences and journals.

After completing my PhD, I joined a private company in the healthcare field as an R&D Manager, where I was responsible for developing the research strategy and main lines of investigation. I was ableto apply my expertise in Machine Learning and computational methods to design and develop intelligent systems that improved healthcare outcomes.

With a postdoctoral grant, I had the opportunity tolead a team of researchers to work on different projects. I have primarily been working in the private sector, where I have contributed to a variety of R&D projects and collaborated with both private companies and public organizations to transfer knowledge and technology.

In 2018, I returned to the University of Málaga as Assistant Professor. My goal is to become Associate Professor during the current year. Since then, I resumed my research, which again fostered my publications.

Currently, my primary objective is to design efficient systems for analyzing and inferring on heterogeneous data, such as images, text or numerical data, by using both Machine Learning and, more importantly, formal methods, and to apply these methods to real-world data. Also, I am interested in developing techniques to make typical machine learning methods interpretable and explainable, with the help of logical modelling.

Due to my experience, I am a researcher with a combination of theoretical background, programming and project management skills. I have a number of publications in prestigious international journals and conferences in the fields of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Computer Science that demonstrate the impact of my work.
